Pinkie Picasso - Art Series #1 by janeesper Pinkie Picasso - Art Series #1 by janeesper
Commission for a friend's young daughter. Her favorite character in the show is our bestest friend Pinkie Pie, and she wants to be an artists when she grows up. So, I cast around in my head for an interesting way to connect the two. Pinkie and Cubism just makes sense.

EDIT: It had been bothering me for a while that Pinkie was not as pink as she ought to be. I thought that it was my monitor (or I was going blind), but it turns out that my original reference was desaturated slightly. So, I went in and corrected that, brought up the overall brightness a tad to compensate and fixed some problem areas while I was at it. I hope you find the changes worth your while.

An interesting note: while playing with the saturation, I discovered that Fluttershy's main two colors share the exact same value level (which is funny for the color theorists out there). Of course, the pony with the highest contrast is the luminous Rarity.

Painted in Photoshop.
Approximate time: 18 hours

I once studied the color schemes of the ponies, and wrote a paper for it fav.me/d64fmpj

For example, Fluttershy's colors are:

BodyPart_Hue_Saturation_Value

Body 55 31 99 #FDF6AF
Hair 335 25 95 #F3B6CF
CM 1 335 25 95 #F3B6CF
CM 2 179 48 78 #68C8C6
Eye Highlight 1 177 27 85 #9ED8D5
Eye Highlight 2 179 48 78 #68C8C6
Eye Gradient 1 178 100 68 #00ADA8
Eye Gradient 2 178 96 33 #035350

It makes sense that Pinkie wouldn't see the world in the same way as everypony else, so her visual art would necessarily reflect a... skewed perspective.

I recognized the left picture - it can be titled "Three mares".
What is the name for the painting that has inspired the right picture?

i can't speak to how Pinkie sees things (except that there's lots of felt), but she certainly expresses herself without constraint.

i think the fandom has proven that MLP itself is art, but i agree that Pinkie is rather the perfect candidate to start this series.

it's not meant to be viewed up close. i don't ever draw using vectors, so it'll never be perfectly clean (much to my dismay), that's why i took away the option to download the thing.

saving the image in a non-lossy format such as PNG would go a long way. love it regardless :)

thank you, sincerely, for the love, but (in the absence of Twi) please allow me to clarify, as one artist to another.

i'm pretty certain that whatever "losses" you're seeing are just brushstrokes and the underpainting. the image itself has print quality resolution and i didn't resize/rotate/manipulate any part of the top paint layer so the PNG format would not help at all. again, you're thinking of vectored graphics (which is what a majority of the pony artists use and use well).

that being said, if you do zoom in all the way it's true that all of the lines look janky, and that's because i actually "painted" this - that is to say, i used a single layer on top of the original sketch layer. i only spent just enough time on cleanup to make it presentable on a 8.5"x11" glossy. the risk of continuing the cleanup past that point (possibly killing the vitality of the lines) far outweighed the marginal benefits.

It's actually not all that bad except from the wrong angle (on a TN screen) or contrast set too high. If this is a desktop display you should probably turn down the contrast, it's usually set stupid high so the screen looks sharper on the sales floor.

as much as i would like to keep making art through Pinkie, i don't see a canon way of including that particular piece (unless i use Madame Le Flour from "Party of One" - that might be a fun Pinkamena piece). you know what? remind me about this once i finish the rest of the Mane Six.

I just took a peek at said art work (Dora Maar au Chat). Mabye the way it could be done would be with Rarity and Opal.

thanks, and good eye! the sculpture turned out significantly different from the source material, but Pinkie's still working on it so...

Gummy was a happy accident. i was only vaguely aware that Picasso had made animal line drawings, but when i saw the shape of his most famous one, i KNEW i had to include it.
