Fluttershy and Ansel Adams.

I see photography as a passive art form requiring perception and patience - all words that describe Fluttershy. If that isn't enough for you, Adams was both a naturalist and an accomplished musician. He was an important figure in the movement to preserve and expand national parks in the United States as well as being an important figure in the movement to elevate photography to the level of Art.

He was not nearly as adorable as Fluttershy, but you can't have everything, can you?

What I find interesting about photography is that the artist is essentially a part of the greater work - you just need to take a few steps back to see the one seeing. In that way, photography is unlike any other form of expression, aside from, perhaps, dance (but one never really removes the dancer from the dance). It's also firmly, necessarily, situated in time. So, my goal in this painting was to show moments of time from some famous photographs with the photographer included. Whether or not these photographs were taken prior to the ones we are all familiar with or afterwards is of no consequence.

Painted in Photoshop
approximate time: too much

Notes:
Bloody adorable Fluttershy. I tell you, she's been the most difficult to draw correctly so far and I bet she keeps that title. Until Rarity, that is, but THAT painting will be the most difficult for a host of other reasons. Dashie's next. Be prepared for something completely abstract.

EDIT: better clouds on top, and more little tweaks.

I've never heard of this photographer. Based on what you've written, he's definitely a perfect fit for our timid, nature loving fluttershy.

I love this picture because of Fluttershy's expression, and the obvious care that's gone into constructing the scenes. Her shyness, serenity, and how easily she becomes uncomfortable really shines through.

I don't know anything about Adams' work, but I'd probably like the picture even more if I did.

thank you. as you can imagine, with such a low-key personality it's difficult to visually portray a range of emotions. i'm glad someone picked up on it.

Adams was brilliant. i couldn't effectively portray the drama of his photographs (which uses a lot of great darks) because the palette for Equestria contains a lot of bright, saturated colors, but do look into him if you enjoy the majesty of nature at all.

Interesting! I used to have a large format camera and lab to that work (and a few 35mm too) But digital has taken my old school ways and tossed them to the curb. One thing remains true compose in your mind and camera first, edit later (at a minimum)!

i always thought the traditional techniques of photo development were fascinating. with digital you lose some of the tangibility of process that a lab affords, but the Adobe Creative Suite doesn't take up a whole room of your house, so i think it's a commensurate trade.

What is neat is that you have made me go back and look at the classic Masters and view new art through that lens!

Adams is a favorite of mine, as is Fluttershy, so I'm happy to see the two combined. I never thought about it but photography does seem to be something Fluttershy would enjoy. Good work.

Your reasoning behind the whole piece speaks wonders. Although I don't know much about Adams as an artist, the way you describe his interests and work do pose him as the perfect match for Fluttershy. And all the time and effort you put into making this certainly paid off--Fluttershy looks adorable here, and you did a really great job of emulating the famous photographs in a style reminiscent of the show. I particularly like the third snapshot, how an out-of-focus Fluttershy is still trying to shy her way out of the shot...either that, or the snap of the shutter still startles her.

The concept of pairing up characters with famous artists is a really great idea, and you're doing a great job of it! (Why don't more people on this site talk about real-world art?) I can't wait to see who you pair the other characters up with. I have no idea what Rainbow would do for art, considering you already paired AJ up with Pollock... I would think Rarity might go well with Thomas Kinkade, the "painter of light." Twilight, though, I'd guess would make art that was either really math- or structurally-oriented (Mondrian, Calder, or Lichtenstein) or really deep or though provoking (Magritte or the like); come to think of it, she'd probably do great paired with M. C. Escher...
